Idaho Is Going Bowling And There Is Nothing You Can Do About It: Idaho Beats Texas State 47-14

Behind a stingy defense and impressive performance by quarterback Matt Linehan, the Idaho Vandals earned bowl eligibility with a 47-14 victory over the Texas State Bobcats.

Heading into the game, Idaho had three chances down the stretch to pull out a single win and go to a bowl game for only the third time in school history. The previous two trips were to the Humanitarian Bowl in 1998 and 2009. This time, the Vandals are all but guaranteed to head to the Arizona Bowl versus a member of the Mountain West Conference. I have voiced my hope of an Idaho/Boise State matchup, but I doubt it will happen.

The Idaho offense was all over the Bobcats defense early in the game, scoring on five of seven drives in the opening half. The most amazing part of Idaho scoring four touchdowns in the opening half was the fact that all four scores came from different players. Tight end Trent “Buck” Cowan scored on a pass from Linehan, Tueni Lupeamanu ran in from a yard out, Denzal Brantley scored from two yards, and Isaiah Saunders completed the quartet of scores with a 24-yard run.

After giving up 134 yards and two touchdowns in the opening two drives, Idaho’s defense made several adjustments and completely stuffed Texas State. In the final 11 drives of the day for Texas State, they were unable to break 100 yards total.

It was so bad for Texas State that I feel the need to list their final 11 drives.

That is not going to win many games.

All that really matters from this game is the fact that Idaho is going bowling. They were rudely told by the Sun Belt that they needed to leave after the 2017 season and had to make the tough decision to move to the FCS after next season. While many teams would have seen multiple transfers from younger players and basically written off this season and the 2017 season to a transitional period, the Vandals have stood strong and have a chance to end their time in the FBS with two straight bowls.

It is way too early to predict a second straight bowl berth (Hello Georgia State), but that would be the best reaction to a snub from the Sun Belt, to take up a bowl berth in both 2016 and 2017.
