NFL Draft Profile: Gerald Everett, South Alabama

Your 1st Sun Belt player off the draft board is likely Gerald Everett

College: South Alabama

Position: Tight End

Height/Weight: 6’4″/240

Accolades:  2016 All-Sun Belt 1st Team, 2015 All-Sun Belt 1st Team, 2017 Senior Bowl Selection, 2017 NFL Combine Invitee

When UAB was nearly murdered by Alabama temporarily put on hiatus, few programs benefited more from the pool of out-of-work Blazers than the South Alabama Jaguars. Among the many Blazers that Joey Jones scooped was wrecking-ball tight end Gerald Everett, a highly recruited prospect who spent a year at Hutchinson Community College before jumping aboard UAB’s targeted doomed up-and-coming football program. Everett made an immediate impact for the Jags, logging 8 TDs on 575 yards in 2015, then following it with 49 receptions and 717 yards in 2016.

Why NFL teams will likely make Gerald Everett the first Sun Belt player off the draft board

Everett was key to South Alabama’s remarkable OOC success in 2016, notably gobbling up eight catches for 95 yards and a game-winning TD against Mississippi State. Against #19 San Diego State, Everett was just as impressive, tallying 103 yards and a score. (This is a slight tick down from when he delivered 164 yards and a score against the Aztecs the previous year). The big tight end excels in big games, earning a quarterback’s confidence with soft hands and a knack for big yardage plays. In 2016, he recorded 9 games with at least one play exceeding 20 yards, which puts him inline with the skillsets of today’s NFL pass catching tight ends.

Why NFL teams will screw up by passing on Gerald Everett

Not everyone is smart (like me), so somebody will probably pass up Gerald Everett so they can overpay for O.J. Howard or Jake Butt. Anyway, here’s what CBSSportsline.com has to say about Everett’s weaknesses:

Tiny hands. Questionable vision as a ballcarrier and needs to be more decisive instead of trying to dance and make defenders miss.

Donald Trump has “tiny hands” and we gave him the keys to the nation. So I don’t see how Everett’s hands prevent him from becoming the most celebrated Sun Belt tight end since…since…Wes Saxton?

When does Gerald Everett come off the 2017 NFL Draft Board?

CBS Sports has Everett the 5th tight end off the board, making him a round 2 or 3 guy. That sounds okay to me.
