Can Sam Houston State Continue Their Cinderella Run?

The Sam Houston State Bearkats are in the Super Regional for the first time ever (it’s also the first time a team from the Southland Conference has made it to the Super Regional). To get there they had a really tough path, they had to play #16 Arizona twice and region host #5 Texas Tech three times.

They beat Arizona both times and dropped the first game to Texas Tech. Facing elimination, the Bearkats beat Arizona in the afternoon and then beat the Red Raiders to force a winner-take-all game the next day.

The Bearkats took a 1-0 lead early but in the top of the 5th Texas Tech took a 3-1 lead, Sam Houston State made it 3-2 in the bottom half. The very next inning, playing small ball, Sam Houston State drove in two runs to take a 4-3 lead. That lead would stick until the end and the Bearkats clinched the right to move on.

Now the Bearkats go to Tallahassee to play #16 Florida State, the Noles have had an up and down season, they have been ranked anywhere from #1 to unranked, when the Noles are at the top of their game, they score a lot of runs quickly and their pitching is shutting opposing batters down.

The Noles advanced to the Super Regional behind an amazing pitching performance from Will Zirzow, he threw a 2-hit complete game shutout against Auburn.

If Sam Houston State plays their small-ball, fast paced, steal a lot of bases game, then I think they can take this series. But with that being said, the Bearkats will need to figure out to get hits off of FSU’s great pitchers. If Sam Houston State pitchers can keep FSU under 3 runs, I love their chances. It’s going to be a great series and hopefully, the Bearkats can show out for the Forgotten 5.
