App State (6-4, 5-1) clinched bowl eligibility Thursday night by dominating their hated rival Georgia Southern 27-6. Aside from a couple of decent drives that resulted in FGs, App State’s defense completely stifled the Eagles offense. The Mountaineers held the inept Eagles offense to 191 total yards on the night.
App State’s balanced attack methodically broke down the Georgia Southern defense. Taylor Lamb had a reasonably efficient game with a QBR rating of 94.6 with 2 TDs and 161 yards on only seven completions. Marcus Williams had 130 yards on 28 carries, Ike Lewis added 67 yards on three catches with 1 TD.
Scott Satterfield moves to a tie for 4th on App State’s all-time win list; he’s 38-22 since taking over that program. App State is now 18-13-1 all-time vs. Georgia Southern.
The game started out alright for Georgia Southern; they scored first for the first time in 11 games. Another metric that shows how far the Eagles have fallen under the Tyson Summers regime. The triple option works best when playing with the lead. Jumping on a team early in games used to be a Georgia Southern hallmark.
Shai Werts did not have a good game at all, only 34 yards on the ground on 17 carries, 5/9 through the air for 40(!) yards. He often looks hurried and rushed back there and hardly ever pitches on option plays. Werts has regressed.
When Kado Brown entered the game for mop-up minutes on the last Eagles drive, he went 5/8 for 40 yards, including one 10-yard run. Granted, he was in the hurry-up, but Brown almost out produced Werts in one drive. That isn’t good.
Look for the Eagles to revert to the two-QB system going forward; this topic may have come up on Georgia Southern Twitter last night.
Georgia Southern is 0-9 for the first time in history. Losing to Georgia State in Paulson and then App State on top of that has taken the wind out of the #HailLunsford bandwagon. It really can’t get much lower for the Eagle nation this year.
This is what rock bottom feels like.
The coaching search is honestly more thrilling than watching the Eagles play at this point.
Eagles finish out vs. South Alabama, @Louisiana, and @Coastal Carolina.
App State needed this win to stop the bleeding after a two-game losing streak. There are now in prime position to win the conference crown. They finish out with an intriguing matchup vs. Georgia State in Atlanta on November 25th and Louisiana in Boone on December 2nd.
