The preseason had been kind to the South Alabama Jaguars as they are ranked in the top 25 of many baseball rankings that have been released. Along with these rankings, they are the favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference.
All of this is deserved as they are returning a stout lineup. Unfortunately, the Jaguars just took a big hit. Preseason Sun Belt All-Conference SS Drew LaBounty took a foul-tip ball off of his eye in an intrasquad scrimmage and will miss the entire season.
LaBounty is a three-year starter at SS and was ready for his fourth year until this happened. The Jaguars will miss a player who is a two-time all conference selection, and was among the national leaders in walks and on-base percentage last season.
While this is certainly a big blow to South Alabama, the Jaguars still have a very good lineup with the likes of preseason All-American Travis Swaggerty, along with offensive studs Dylan Hardy and Brenden Donovan. This may set them back a bit, but they are still the team to beat in the Sun Belt.
