“New outfield, who dis?”
If you are the Eastern Michigan Eagles, this might just be your adage this year. Starting new faces is a not uncommon in college sports, but turning over an entire outfield isn’t quite normal.
After a stellar 2018 recruiting class the Eagles will lean on three new faces when they take the field later today in Fort Myers, FL. After losing OF Mike Mioduszewski to graduation, who is 5th all time in at bats at EMU, the experience graduates with him. But don’t tell Eric Roof, head coach of the Eagels, that they won’t be good. Roof was named interim head coach at EMU after Mark Van Ameyde left for another coaching position. So needless to say Roof wants to impress and keep the long term gig.
Nate Jones (RF): Nate is a versatile athlete. A high school graduate of Lakeview in Michigan where he helped them to a 27-5 record and team high .538 team battling average. Jones was a Michigan top 15 player overall and 4th in position of outfield. To say the Eagles are excited about having Jones this year is an understatement. Staying healthy and putting in the hard work I would expect Jones to hit for .300 this year, and maybe even see him on the mound in years to come. 2020 draft looks very bright for this high school phenom.
Jeff Timko (LF): Playing for one of the top high schools in Michigan, Brother Rice, Timko was a great recruit in 2016. That’s right he is a red shirt freshmen, but a freshmen none the less. Timko had 43 hits, .554 on base percentage and .426 average in his senior year on the way to a Catholic League Championship. With one year of college experience under his belt the much anticipated start to Timko’s college career starts today as he will take left field for the Eagles and bat sixth.
Cameron Cruz (CF): Cruz is not new to college baseball but he is new to D1 baseball. Transferring from Mesa Community College where as a sophomore he hit .313. Cruz will be a threat on the base paths. Hitting seventh in the lineup, Cruz will look to make an impact early as a Junior but also in his debut in D1 baseball today.
The Eagles travel to Florida for a 4 game weekend series against Florida Gulf Coast. A double header on Friday starting at 2 pm EST and 1 pm starts both Saturday and Sunday. The game is not being broadcast but live stats can be followed here.
