Short Overview of the First Four Games

March Madness time!

Dirty soda in a styrofoam
Spend a day to get my mind blown
Dress it up and go to NASA
200 Miles on the dash
Gotta roll a pound up and gas it
Switching lanes in a Grand Rapid
We the ones that kept it cool…

Oh, wrong March Madness? Sorry about that.

It’s the best time of the year for college sports fans, March Madness. The unpredictability that everyone tries to predict, the upsets, the Cinderella’s are just some of what makes this month special.

The tournament starts off with the “First Four,” or play-in games, for the newcomers. Out of the four games, we will be covering three of them, those three are;

16 LIU-Brooklyn vs. 16 Radford

11 St. Bonaventure vs. 11 UCLA

16 North Carolina Central vs. 16 Texas Southern

Let’s get into the previews.

 LIU-Brooklyn Blackbirds(18-16, 10-8 Northeast) vs. Radford Highlanders(22-12, 12-6 Big South)

Game Time: 6:40 PM EST

Location: UD Arena, Dayton, OH

BPI: Radford 71.5%

LIU-Brooklyn is coming in off of an upset win over rival Long Island and #1 seed Wagner in the Northeast title game. The Blackbirds had a career performance from senior Joel Hernandez as he dropped 32 points and outscored the entire Wagner team in the first half (19-18). If the Blackbirds want to win they will need another amazing performance from Hernandez.

Radford punched its ticket to the tournament in one of the coolest ways possible. Carlik Jones pulled up from three at the buzzer and well… I’ll let the video speak for itself.

Radford should be able to win this game with relative ease and while I don’t think they will beat Villanova, don’t be surprised if it’s a closer game than it should be in a 1/16 matchup.

LIU-Brooklyn 53-Radford 68

Next game.

St. Bonaventure Bonnies(25-7, 14-4 A-10) vs. UCLA Bruins(21-11, 11-7 PAC-12)

Game Time: 9:10 PM EST

Location: UD Arena, Dayton, OH

BPI: 52.1% St. Bonaventure

The Bonnies last game was against the Davidson Wildcats in the semifinals of the A-10 tournament. Davidson hit 16 threes and beat them 82-70. St. Bona got an at-large bid, but the experienced Bonnie team has a tough matchup against the Bruins of UCLA.

The Bruins PAC-12 tournament ended in a loss to Arizona. I thought that USC should be in this game instead of UCLA, but the committee said otherwise.

The Bonnies have an extraordinary backcourt duo of Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley that could lead St. Bona over UCLA. The seniors average 19.8 and 18.5 points per game respectively.

The experience of the Bonnies will push them over UCLA.

St. Bonaventure 70-UCLA 68

Last game.

North Carolina Central Eagles(19-15, 9-7 MEAC) vs. Texas Southern Tigers(15-19, 12-6 SWAC)

Game Time: 6:40 PM EST

Location: UD Arena, Dayton, OH

BPI: Texas So. 59.4%

Texas Southern finished third in the SWAC but their non-conference record was 0-13. The Tigers are led by leading scorer Donte Clark(18.6 PPG) The BPI says that they are favored but I don’t see how, sure they are hot, but they haven’t won a single game outside of the SWAC.

NCCU won the MEAC by beating #1 seed Hampton 71-63. The Eagles have made back to back tournament appearances for the first time since 1996-97. Last year they lost to UC Davis in the First Four Round.

This Eagles team is led by Raasean Davis and Pablo Rivas who are looking to avenge last years early exit.

I think the Eagles will get it done and move on to face #1 seed Xavier.

NCCU 55-Texas So. 50
