Bucknell has a call in to Kermit Davis on what it takes to beat a Tom Izzo top ranked Michigan State team.
Kermit Davis is/was the coach of the 2015-16 Middle Tennessee team that knocked off Michigan State as a 15 seed in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. No matter what the ranking is, knocking off a Michigan State team come tournament time is no easy task. Although if there is one team in this tournament that is up to the task it’s Bucknell.
How did Bucknell get here?
Being the regular season and conference tournament champions in the Patriot league will get you into the NCAA tournament every year. Bucknell also has an impressive resume going 25-9 and 16-2 in the Patriot league. Of those 9 loses, 12 point loss at North Carolina, 2 point loss to Maryland and a 28 point loss to Arkansas. Although losing is never the key to success, playing a tough out of conference schedule is always a good way to get tested early.
Bucknell is lead by experience with Zach Thomas a Senior scoring over 20 points per game. Thomas has been starting for the past two years along with Senior Stephen Brown and four year starter Nana Foulland. When they take the court Friday where they lack in talent will be made up in chemistry.
Michigan State Champion Favorite?
Even though a 3 seed, oddsmakers are give the nod on the Spartans as being one of the favorites to win it all. The Spartans had a very impressive year other than the early knockout in the Big Ten tournament to Michigan.
The Spartans are led by two underclassmen that are projected NBA lottery picks. Sophomore Miles Bridges is playing his best basketball this year averaging 16.9 points per game. Jaren Jackson Jr. is a six-eleven freshmen who is averaging double digit points per game and also projected NBA lottery pick. Enough fire power to get them far in the tournament.
How Bucknell pulls the Upset
With the experience on the court for the Bison they will rely on smart play and less turnovers. Nothing beats having experience on the basketball court come March Madness. Zach Thomas will the be key in completing the upset and getting past Michigan St.
Seeing how Michigan St. has played all year it is hard to pick against them. Taking Michigan St. to win this one and make it to the weekend.
