Liberty Flames

As Nic wrote in his recap of the Independents, Liberty looked pretty good on the offensive side of the ball. With nearly 600 yards, they dropped 52 points on an Old Dominion team who isn’t that great. Good team or bad team 52 points is still very impressive; especially when it comes in your first game at the FBS level.
The Flames offense is led by Stephen “Buckshot” Calvert. Calvert has a cannon for an arm and has weapons all around him. Army’s secondary, which looked very bad against Duke QB Daniel Jones, will be up for another tough test. Calvert’s favorite target is Antonio Gandy-Golden, who is probably one of the most slept on wideouts in all of the G5.
The Liberty defense isn’t anything special, they aren’t terrible and they aren’t great. They don’t have to be great with an offense like the one they have.

Army Black Knights

Last week was anything but great for the Black Knights but this week could be just what the doctor ordered; a new FBS program that isn’t supposed to be good at the FBS level this year.
The offense(as much as some people like to say otherwise)didn’t look terrible against a pretty good Duke defense. QB Kelvin Hopkins looked like he knew how to run the triple option effectively, not to mention he gives Army an added element that Ahmad Bradshaw didn’t: the passing game.
Hopkins had 197 passing yards, most by an Army QB since Chris Carter had 208 against Navy in 2015. 21 is more passing attempts than Monken would want, so don’t expect that trend to continue, expect more like 10-12 passes per game. If Army can get 250+ rushing yards and 75+ passing yards they will be nearly impossible to beat.
If the Black Knights eliminate the turnovers, the offense will start to hum like Army fans expected it to.
The defense was extremely rough for the Black Knights, the secondary couldn’t stop anything Daniel Jones threw at them. I don’t expect them to be *that* bad again this week, but Calvert will definitely test them. Look to see Mike Reynolds at DB instead of Javhari Bourdeau.

Army will not blow Liberty out of the water like many people on Twitter think; the Flames are strong where Army isn’t. I do expect Army to win and pull away a little bit by the end of the game but it will be close for the first three quarters.
The option will take over in the fourth and Army will wear the Liberty defense down.
Expect a lot of points.
