Army Black Knights
The Black Knights are traveling to California after a bye week (that seemed like forever) for a game that I consider to be a trap game against SJSU.
Jeff Monken was quick to deny that this was a trap game by saying:
You think Army has such a thing as a trap game? There’s no such thing as a trap game here. There is nobody laying in wait for us. We are fully on notice I assure you.
There is no denying that this game has “trap game” written all over it, SJSU is at best the 4th worst team in the country and Army is hot, with their last win coming in blowout fashion against a previously undefeated Buffalo team. It might be easy for the Black Knights to overlook them.
The Army offense has looked really good with Kelvin Hopkins under center. They are averaging 28.6 points, 308 rushing yards, and 110.2 passing yards per game (yes, you read that right, Army is averaging over 100 yards passing).
The Army passing game has been extremely effective this season. They rank 30th in passing marginal efficiency and 3rd in passing marginal explosiveness.
This is your daily reminder that Kelvin Hopkins is legit. There, you’ve been reminded.
Defensively, they are still the definition of bend but don’t break. They give up 354 yards per game, but when they need to stop the opponent from scoring, they seem to come up in the clutch (recall the final play from the Hawaii game).
They have an odd matchup in this one because SJSU has a good QB in Josh Love but he has little to no talent around him, their offense is strictly Love or bust. If they can stop him, they will dominate.
San Jose Spartans
Well… They aren’t UTEP at least.
The Spartans are anywhere from the second to the fourth worst team in the country (SJSU, Nebraska, and UCLA are all interchangeable). They still don’t have a win on the season, but they have been close to getting one.
They took Hawaii to five overtimes but lost on a field goal. They also had a really impressive comeback against Colorado State last week coming back from a 28 point deficit to take a 30-28 lead before collapsing late.
Defensively they are in for a tough game, last week Colorado State ran Izzy Matthews up the middle a lot and it seemed like every time they did it he got 15 yards before being touched. Army has four quality b-backs, they are going to have a field day.
They give up 488.4 yards and 39.2 points per game, this could be a long day for the Spartan defense.
I said this was a trap game but Army will still win easily. SJSU’s defense can’t stop anything, the Black Knights might be able to put up 60 points come Saturday afternoon.
I fully expect Kelvin Hopkins to have over 300 yards all by himself (150+ passing and rushing). The b-backs will have around 100 yards combine and the slots will have another 100. That’s 500+ total yards. This one will be fun for Army fans to watch.
The only question left is how much will Army win by?
