Army Black Knights
Army is coming off an unimpressive win against Rice. The offense looked slow as they were unable to get the fullback dive going consistently. They finished with 231 rushing yards with QB Kelvin Hopkins leading the way with 80 yards.
The Black Knights missed fullback Connor Slomka, who was out with an undisclosed injury. Sandon McCoy stepped into the starting role. Early in the game he struggled, getting stuffed on a 4th and 1, but as the game went on, he got more comfortable. He finished with 70 yards on 20 carries.
A late touchdown pass from Hopkins to Kell Walker won the game for the Black Knights.
Army’s defense slipped up once and it resulted in a 54 yard touchdown. That run was nearly 30% of Rice’s rushing yards (29.8%) and 22% of their total offensive output.
In order for Army to have a chance in this game, they need to have long, sustained drives. If they can hold on to the ball for 35+ minutes and stop Michigan once or twice, the Black Knights might be able to pull off the upset in the Big House.
Michigan welcomed Middle Tennessee State to the Big House last week and won 40-21.
The Wolverines had an RPO heavy attack led by QB Shea Patterson. He finished with 203 passing yards and three touchdowns. WR Tarik Black is a deep threat and TE Sean McKeon is one of the best TE’s in not only the Big Ten, but the country.
RB Zach Charbonnet had 90 yards on eight carries. Army is going to have to find away to slow these guys down. There is no way to stop them completely but if they can limit their damage, Army will be in the game.
Defensively, nothing jumps out at you. They gave up 301 total yards to the Blue Raiders. While MTSU runs a pass first offense, the Michigan defense did hold them to 2.4 yards per carry on 28 carries.
Army needs everything to go right for them to win this game. They need to have 35-40 minutes time of possession, have zero turnovers, and they need to force a turnover or two.
If they do all of this, Army will win. But judging off of what they showed last week, I don’t think everything will go the Black Knights way. I think this will be a close game, but I think the Wolverines will pull it out in the end.
