The Mountain West’s biggest surprise, the Spartans have more wins then I thought they’d have all season.
They took down Arkansas at Arkansas and nearly took down Nevada on the road as well. Even if they don’t win another game, 3-9 is a huge improvement over 3-22 over the last two seasons combined.
Josh Love has been at the center of SJSU’s “resurgence” (if you want to call it that). The senior QB has 2,041 yards, 12 touchdowns, and three picks.
As Nic said in the surprise article: “the Spartans at a minimum have enough offense to be interestingly bad and keep most of their games close for most of the time.”
If they hang around with Army don’t be too shocked. Love is a capable QB who can throw on any defense he faces.
Defensively, they give up just under 30 points per game and 444.9 yards per game. They give up about the same amount of passing yards to rushing yards. They aren’t good at stopping either. If Army’s o-line can step up, SJSU could be in for a long day.
Army made Nic’s other article, the biggest bad surprise for the Independents.
No doubt, Army is in a bad spot, but this is the game to get things right.
In order to win they need to get the ball outside, use Kell Walker and Artice Hobbs’ speed to your advantage. The o-line isn’t built to handle fullback dive after fullback dive. Army has to run their offense backward now, go outside first and use that to set up the fullback dive.
The defense isn’t bad but they aren’t great either, giving up 21.7 points per game isn’t ideal, but you can work with it.
The problem with the defense is that they forgot how to tackle. It’s hard to win games when guys are breaking three or four tackles per play.
If they can fix that issue, the Black Knights should win in blowout fashion.
A blowout win is just what the doctor ordered. Especially before the Air Force game.
That’s exactly what they’ll get. Artice Hobbs will have the game of his career on Saturday afternoon.
