2019-20 Army Basketball Preview: Part One

The 2019-20 Army Basketball Preview will be a two-part series with part one being the men’s team and part two being the women’s team.
On to part one.

Men’s Basketball

This is head coach Jimmy Allen’s make or break year. If the Black Knights have another down year, I’d assume new AD Mike Buddie would look for a new guy.
Army is a unique situation, they return 16 players (five seniors, five juniors, six sophomores), yet they are still really young.
The team is experienced yet inexperienced at the same time, it’s truly an odd situation.
The Black Knights bring back two 1,000 point scorers in Matt Wilson and Tommy Funk. Funk is also the program leader in assists in a season and in career assists. He is one of eight people in Patriot League history to have 1,000 career points and 500 career assists. HeĀ averaged 12.6 points and 5.9 assists per game last year.
Wilson was the leagues leading rebounder last season averaging 8.6 boards per game. He also scored 13.8 points per game.
6’8″ junior Alex King is back and will look to build off of his strong sophomore campaign where he put up 7.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
The team opens up the season with a tough road game against #10 Villanova. The Black Knights will look to shock the basketball world and pull off their biggest upset in school history. The game will be on Fox Sports 1 at 8:30 pm on November 5th.

Most Likely Scenario

Regardless of what happens against Villanova, Army needs to beat Air Force. The Black Knights currently have a five-game win streak against the Falcons. The Buffalo game will be a very hard matchup for the Black Knights but if everything goes their way, they can win it.
Other than those tough matchups, the non-con schedule is very winnable. I think they’ll drop the Villanova, Marist, and Buffalo games but win everything else.

This is where Jimmy Allen keeps his job or not. If they sweep Navy, no matter what happens, I think he’s safe. If they split or get swept by Navy and finished sub-.500 in conference play, he’s gone.
If Army can clinch a first-round bye in the Patriot League tournament, I think this season will be deemed a success, the team is still very young. 2020-21 will be the year Army can make a run for the NCAA Tournament.
