The Warhawks have a huge void to fill with star QB Caleb Evans graduating. JUCO transfer Jeremy Hunt and last years backup Colby Suits are battling for the QB job.
Suits will get the start, but head coach Matt Viator said both QB’s will see playing time on Saturday.
“I know quarterback is the position most people are worried about, but for your information, we’re going to play multiple guys at every position,” Viator said. “It’s not just the quarterbacks and we’re going to give them all an opportunity.”
The Sun Belt’s leading returning rusher, running back Josh Johnson is back but he will be running behind an o-line that lost four starters.
Tight end Josh Pederson is also back and will be someone to look out for this week and on Sundays in the near future.
Defensively ULM returns seven starters. However, the Warhawks front three is only returning two tackles for loss, both of which came from Mason Husman.
The leader of the defense is the best DB in the Sun Belt, Corey Straughter. Last season he has five interceptions and ten pass break ups.
The Warhawks also lost their defensive coordinator Mike Collins after he stepped down on September 2nd.
“There comes a time for everyone when you figure things out and realize it’s time to step away, and that time has come for me.” Collins said in a statement posted to ULM Football’s twitter account.
New defensive coordinator Nate Woody had the defense humming last week. Last season MTSU averaged 408.3 yards per game and 26.3 points per game. At Michie Stadium on Saturday the Black Knights allowed 184 yards, 0 points, had 4 takeaways, and scored a touchdown of their own. All of this was without DB’s Jabari Moore and Javari Bourdeau.
Linebacker Jon Rhattigan will look to build off of his first career start where he had a fumble recovery, pick six, and six tackles.
Look for Army to stack the box to force the new ULM QB to beat them with his arm. If they can slow Josh Johnson down they will put the Black Knights offense in position to win.
Army fans got introduced to a new face on Saturday, Plebe slotback Tyrell Robinson quickly became a fan favorite after his 94 yards on 9 carries where he showcased electric speed and quick cuts. Kell Walker may not be there anymore but the Black Knights have a new speed demon in Robinson.
Christian Anderson’s decision making was fantastic against MTSU. He almost always made the correct read and made a great pitch when he had to. If he can keep that up, there is no reason as to why the Army offense can’t keep moving the ball efficiently.
The Black Knights only attempted four passes last week but if they decide to throw in this game, do not throw near Corey Straughter. Avoid him at all costs. He’ll make you pay if they throw near him.
Army’s defense is key here, if they can wreak havoc again this week, this will be another blowout. Limit the damage Johnson causes and they’ll be fine. He’s a great back so don’t be shocked if he breaks off a big run or two.
Offensively the Black Knights need to keep the fullback dive rolling. If Sandon McCoy gets going, that will open up the outside for Artice Hobbs and Tyrell Robinson.
Army rolls again.
