The Citadel isn’t your typical FCS opponent. They are much like Army because they run the triple option and love to hold on to the ball.
The Bulldogs went into Atlanta last year and shocked Georgia Tech while holding the ball for 41:50 while only completing one pass.
They aren’t a big-play team either. In 2019, The Citadel rushed for 31 touchdowns. Of those 31, only two were longer than 10 yards.
QB Brandon Rainey doesn’t throw often, but when he does, he finds the end zone. He had 13 passing touchdowns last season and has one so far this year.
Senior linebacker Willie Eubanks III is one of the top linebackers in the FCS. The reigning Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year recorded 112 tackles last season. So far, he has 21 tackles in his three games.
This is the Bulldogs’ last game of the fall season; they don’t want to leave winless. I think they’ll keep it closer than most people think.
The Black Knights are coming off a win over Abilene Christian that was the 700th win in program history.
Army had two 100 yard rushers for the first time since 2017 (Ahmad Bradshaw and Kell Walker vs. Eastern Michigan) in QB Jemel Jones and slotback Tyrell Robinson.
Robinson continues to impress; the plebe now leads the team in rushing with 253 yards on 20 carries (12.65 YPC).
Jones impressed as well; the QB came in for Christian Anderson when he got hurt and balled out.
He had 138 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries as well as a passing touchdown. Jabari Laws isn’t healthy enough to play yet, so to have a QB who can go in and get the job done is huge for the Black Knights.
The defense has forced eight turnovers through their first four games and look to grow that number some more this week against a team with seven turnovers in three games.
I think this game will be closer than the spread would suggest. Both teams are triple option teams, possessions will be at a premium.
Army will win big but not by 29 points big. Also, look for Jemel Jones to get more playing time.
