Georgia Southern Eagles
The Eagles are a very good team. Sitting at 6-2 with their only losses to a ranked Louisiana team and a ranked Coastal Carolina team.
Like Army, they also run a triple-option offense. Their version is very different though. They run a lot more misdirection stuff and rely on speed more than Army does.
It feels like QB Shai Werts has been at Georgia Southern for 10 years but the senior is insanely talented. He has 789 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, 605 rushing yards, and six rushing touchdowns. His biggest flaw is his interceptions. He has six of them so far.
Running backs J.D. King and Wesley Kennedy III are two studs. Kennedy is a speed guy who is great at catching passes out of the backfield. King is their leading rusher with 625 yards and five touchdowns.
Defensively, the Eagles are solid. They give up 21.5 points, 92.6 rushing yards, and 232.9 passing yards per game.
Army Black Knights
*cue navy and air force fans saying Army can’t beat good teams*
The criticism is warranted. Sitting at 6-2 is significantly less impressive when the two losses are against the two best teams you’ve played.
This is a big week, I’d argue Georgia Southern is a better team than Tulane.
If I’m Jeff Monken I’m starting Tyhier Tyler or Cade Ballard at QB this week. Tyler and Werts are very similar and I think that would be a cool matchup to watch.
The Eagles run defense is legit but the Army offense can’t get scared of it and start throwing the ball because of it.
Run. The. Ball. That’s how you win this game Army. Stick with what works, don’t get cute. No more trick plays.
The Army defense needs to get back to getting after the QB. Shai Werts won’t pick you apart from the pocket but is a more than capable passer.
Army’s defense also needs to force a turnover or two. That’s how Georgia Southern lost both games, they turned it over at terrible times. Force them into some turnovers and you win the game.
The two losses the Eagles have are against run heavy teams; if Army can get the ground game rolling they should be fine. Army needs to force a turnover as well. Get Werts off the field and don’t let him go to work.
This is going to be a tough game for the Black Knights. Jeff Monken’s former team is more than capable of winning this game. Army tried to get cute last week and lost because of it. If they get cute again, they’ll lose again. If they play Army football, they’ll win. It’s that simple.
